New Delhi [India], September 10 (ANI): Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) chief coach Satyanarayan lauded the Indian contingent for their historic performance at the Paris Paralympics, calling it a work of “teamwork.”
The Indian contingent concluded its historic Paris Paralympics campaign with a total of 29 medals, including seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze medals, the most by the country in the history of the competition.
With this landmark campaign, India has surpassed their previously most-successful campaign at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, which gave them 19 medals, including five golds, eight silvers, and six bronze medals.
Speaking about the country’s historic performance to ANI, Satyanarayan said, “This is a big achievement for para-athletes. One can indeed become a para-athlete, they have shown. Earlier, we used to get only one-two medals. We did not get any medals in 2008, but now we have 29. Sports in our country is improving. This is teamwork. Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and the and the Paralympic Committee of India joined forces and this way, we can win more medals in the Olympics as well.”
Satyanarayan was appreciative of country’s para-athletic contingent, who brought home a total of 17 medals, including four golds, six silvers and seven bronze medals.
“The para-athletes trained systematically, we all worked together, president, secretary, etc. Nobody has had any complaints and everything was taken care of,” he said.
This record-haul also helped India cross the 50-medal mark in the history of the competition. A record of 84 para-athletes represented the tricolour from August 28 to Sunday in 12 disciplines, as compared to nine back in Tokyo 2020. India also participated in new sports at Paris: paracycling, para rowing, and blind judo.
India established several records and unlocked some new “firsts” at the Paralympic Games.
