New Delhi [India], August 27 (ANI): BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia on Tuesday hit out at the TMC led West Bengal government over the Kolkata police’s crackdown on the protestors taking part in Nabanna Abhijaan Rally amidst the row over the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case.
Security personnel on Tuesday lobbed tear gas shells, used water cannons and resorted to lathicharge to disperse protestors on the Howrah Bridge marching towards the West Bengal State Secretariat Nabanna.
BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia termed today’s actions from the West Bengal government as ‘dictatorship’.
“What’s happening in Nabbana clearly shows what dictatorship looks like.”
“Today, when Mamata Banerjee failed and students were protesting, the entire stage was destroyed. But when the lungi-wearing infiltrators protest, who are assumed to be TMC members because of their religion, the police do nothing,” he said.
He demanded resignation from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Police Commissioner.
“If this is the character of the Chief Minister, then both Mamata Banerjee and the Police Commissioner should resign. There should be a polygraph test for both Mamata Banerjee and the Police Commissioner. We will stand with the victim’s family and the students until our sister gets justice”, he added.
BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla also took a jibe at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said that if so much security had been provided at the RG Kar hospital, then it would not have been desecrated by miscreants on the night of August 14.
Shehzad Poonawalla said, “Mamata Banerjee is not Didi but is behaving like Idi Ameen. Mamata Banerjee’s government has protected the rapists, destroyed evidence, and suppressed the voice of truth, for which the Supreme Court and the High Court reprimanded.”
“Now once again, when the students, doctors, and common citizens’ are taking out Nabanna Chalo Abhiyan’ to demand justice for the daughter, Mamata Banerjee’s government is blocking the roads with containers,” he further said.
The TMC however claimed that it was the BJP that had led the protest and incited the protestors.
“Police being brutally thrashed by BJP goons in the name of Justice. Who will get justice for this policeman? Right to peaceful process cannot mean right to brutal assault . Will paid trolls & Godi Media answer this?,” asked TMC MP Mahua Moitra in a post on X.
Earlier, protestors gathered at the Howrah Bridge, climbing atop police barricades and clashed with police personnel during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protest march.
They were seen breaking and dragging away the barricades that were erected at the Santragachi area en route to the Secretariat.Ahead of the protest, called amid the ongoing row over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, police had thrown a ring of security around the West Bengal state secretariat.
On Monday, Additional Commissioner of Police Kolkata, Supratim Sarkar said that they have rejected an application by ‘Paschimbanga Chhatro Samaj’ to hold a rally called ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ on August 27. He added that the police rejected their application because the group did not seek formal permission and provided insufficient details.
The brutal rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor on the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital premises sparked outrage all over the country. The incident shook the entire nation, and since then several protests have been staged demanding justice for the victim.
The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. (ANI)
