Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], August 19 (ANI): BJP national spokesperson CR Kesavan on Monday stated that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has to resign to ensure that there is a non-partisan probe into the case where a doctor was raped and murdered inside a Kolkata hospital.
Kesavan said, “The Supreme Court has taken suo moto cognisance on the issue and they are going to hear it tomorrow and the Governor of West Bengal has sought time with the Law Minister. People of Bengal has lost faith in the state government and Mamata Banerjee has failed her people as Health Minister, Police Minister, Chief Minister and as a woman and it is time she resigns as Chief Minister of West Bengal to ensure that there is a non-partisan probe of this gruesome incident which has transpired in Kolkata.”
The BJP spokesperson further accused Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi of maintaining silence on the rape-murder incident.
“Why is Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi maintaining a studied silence on this heinous incident in Kolkata? Why has Sonia Gandhi not condemned the TMC government which is chocking and muzzling voices seeking justice? It is time Sonia Gandhi breaks her silence on one of the darkest chapters in India’s democracy after Indira Gandhi’s emergency,” Kesavan asked.
He further alleged that the parents of the victim had lost faith in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. “Yesterday, we saw reaction of the parents of the victim. They said that attempts are being made to put all the people seeking justice behind bars, and they questioned the duplicity of Mamata Banerjee and said that originally they had faith in her but now they do not have the faith. Parents also said that the Kolkata Police were trying to hush up the case and cited the incident where three bodies were kept in crematorium but their daughter’s body was hurriedly cremated,” Kesavan said.
The BJP leader further said that the incident has created division in the Trinamool Congress.
“West Bengal government is under fear. Yesterday there was a football match between two rivals, East Bengal and Mohun Began. There were reports that the audience would seek justice and as a result, the match was cancelled. There is a division of TMC. Police have sent summons to Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Ray for tweeting that there should be custodial interrogation of the principal,” he said.
On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, sparking nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community. On August 14, the protest site and the hospital campus at RG Kar were vandalized by a mob, prompting security personnel to disperse the crowd.
To maintain law and order, Kolkata police have imposed Section 163 of the BNSS around RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for seven days, effective from August 18. (ANI)
