Agartala (Tripura) [India], May 22 (ANI): In remembrance of the late Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Rajiv Gandhi, Tripura joined the rest of the nation in observing his Martyrdom Day with due respect. Ceremonies were held across all district offices in the state to honour his memory.
At the Tripura Pradesh Congress office, senior Congress leaders gathered to pay homage. The event commenced with the hoisting of the national flag at half-mast, in accordance with the national mourning declared due to the accidental death of the President of Iran. Following this, leaders placed floral tributes to Rajiv Gandhi’s portrait.
The Tripura Congress also took to their official X handle, posting, “The death anniversary of former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi was observed today with due dignity at the Agartala Assembly constituency.”
“Humble tribute to former Prime Minister ‘Bharat Ratna’ Shri Rajiv Gandhiji, father of modern India and pioneer of peace and harmony, on his death anniversary. Your contribution to building modern India through your revolutionary and visionary policies will always be remembered,” it stated in a separate post.
Among those who paid their respects were Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha, MLA Sudip Roy Barman, MLA Birjit Sinha, MLA Gopal Chandra Roy, former Pradesh Congress Presidents Dibachandra Rhankhawl and Pijush Kanti Biswas, as well as former MLA Ashok Debbarma.
After the tribute ceremony at the Congress office, leaders proceeded to Gandhighat to offer further respects.
In continuation of the day’s events, the Tripura Pradesh Congress organized a blood donation camp at their headquarters. The camp was inaugurated by Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha. A total of 65 volunteers participated in the camp, donating blood as a tribute to the humanitarian values Rajiv Gandhi championed.
Rajiv Gandhi took over the charge of the Congress in 1984 following the assassination of his mother and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He became India’s youngest Prime Minister at the age of 40 when he assumed office in October 1984.
He served as the Prime Minister of India till December 2, 1989. Born on August 20, in 1944, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber during an election rally in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991. (ANI)
