New Delhi [India], May 31 (ANI): The Southwest Monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of northeast Bay of Bengal, Tripura, Meghalaya and Assam and most parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.
“The Southwest Monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of the northeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of the northwest Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of Tripura, Meghalaya, Assam and most parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim,” said the weather department.
The IMD on Thursday announced the onset of Southwest monsoon over Kerala and northeast India.
The monsoon hit the country’s mainland two days in advance of its normal date of onset on June 1.
Normally, the southwest monsoon sets in over Kerala on June 1 and it advances over most of northeast India by June 5.
Thus, the southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala two days before the normal date and over northeast India, six days before the normal date, according to the IMD.
As per the IMD, it has also advanced into most parts of the Lakshadweep area, most of the south Arabian Sea, some parts of the central Arabian Sea, and some parts of south Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, over 50 people have reportedly died due to heatstroke in different parts of the country since Thursday.
These deaths were reported as the temperature soared past 50 degrees Celsius in parts of North India, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar this week.
Four people succumbed to heatstroke and died at the Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) in Odisha’s Sundargarh on Friday morning, said an official.
Additional District Magistrate (ADM), Rourkela, Ashutosh Kulkarni shared details about the heatwave-related deaths and said, “As many as 50 patients were brought to the RGH Hospital yesterday following extreme heatwave conditions in the district, after which all of them were admitted. Four people succumbed to the heatstroke and died here at the hospital in Rourkela.”
At least 5 people died after suffering heatstrokes at a hospital in Bihar’s Aurangabad district, said an official on Friday.
The death toll due to heat wave conditions in Bihar’s Aurangabad, which reached 12 earlier has risen to 17 as of Friday.
District Magistrate, Aurangabad, Shrikant Shastri spoke on the development of the casualties as part of heat-related issues and said, “5 people admitted to the hospital died. When we will get the post-mortem report, then we will get to know the exact reason.”
As extreme temperatures continue to grapple in parts of northwest and central India, heatwave conditions have been disrupting the day-to-day lives of the people.
The India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday that the heatwave to severe heatwave conditions prevailing over Northwest and Central India are likely to reduce gradually from May 30.
It further said that hot and humid weather is very likely to prevail over isolated parts of Konkan and Goa on May 30 and 31. (ANI)
