New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): Shiv Sena leader Milind Deora on Thursday wrote to Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu regarding the near-miss incident at the Mumbai Airport where an IndiGo aircraft landed while an Air India flight was simultaneously taking off on the same runway.
Deora in his letter to Kinjarapu requested to undertake some safety measures, including enhancing safety protocols and assessing infrastructure and capacity expansion.
“I am writing to express my grave concern regarding a recent incident at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai, where an IndiGo aircraft landed while an Air India flight was simultaneously taking off on the same runway. This incident, considering the airport’s current handling of over 1,000 flights daily, highlights the critical risks associated with runway congestion and poses a severe threat to passenger safety,” the Shiv Sena leader said.
He urged the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to initiate a comprehensive inquiry into the matter.
“The aforementioned occurrence necessitates immediate attention and action to prevent the recurrence of such dangerous lapses. Therefore, I earnestly request the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to undertake the following measures with utmost urgency; Initiate a Comprehensive Inquiry: Conduct an exhaustive investigation into the incident to determine the underlying causes and identify any procedural or systemic failures that contributed to this near-miss,” Deora said.
“Enhancement of Safety Protocols: Review and reinforce existing safety protocols to mitigate risks associated with runway congestion and ensure robust mechanisms are in place to prevent similar incidents in the future. Assessment of Infrastructure and Capacity Expansion: Conduct a thorough assessment of the airport’s infrastructure and explore viable options for capacity expansion to manage the high volume of air traffic more safely and efficiently,” the Shiv Sena leader wrote in his letter.
He further thanked Civil Aviation for their immediate attention to this urgent matter and hoped for their prompt response and proactive measures to ensure the continued safety of aviation operations.
“The safety and security of passengers must remain our paramount concern. Therefore, I implore your esteemed office to take swift and decisive action to address this critical issue Thank you for your immediate attention to this urgent matter and I look forward to your prompt response and proactive measures to ensure the continued safety of our aviation operations,” Deora said.
