New Delhi [India], July 15 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday assured to look into the listing of the matter on money bills.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal mentioned the money bills matter before a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. The CJI Chandrachud assured that he will see into it when he forms constitution benches.
Senior Advocate Indira Jaising informed the court about the LIC issue relating to money bills. The court said that it would list it.
A seven-judge constitution bench will hear the matter. In 2022, a three-judge bench of the top court upheld the validity of various provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), which empowers the ED to make arrests, conduct searches and seizures and attach proceeds of crime.
However, the court had said that the question of enactment of amendments to the PMLA Act as a money bill has to be decided by a larger bench of seven judges, who are already dealing with this issue.
The top court’s July 27, 2022, order copy said that it has not examined the question as to whether some of the amendments to the Prevention of Money- Laundering Act, 2002 could not have been enacted by the Parliament by way of a Finance Act and left it open for being examined along with or after the decision of the larger bench.
