Mohali (Punjab) [India], August 28 (ANI): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, responding to the recent remarks of actor-turned-politician and MP Kangana Ranaut on farmers’ agitation, said people elected Kangana to resolve the issues of her parliamentary constituency, Mandi, and not to make “absurd” and “baseless” statements.
An MP from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi stoked a controversy recently by suggesting that the farmers’ protests could have led to a Bangladesh-like crisis in the country if the leadership was not strong enough.
After Ranaut’s statement, the party also distanced itself from the statement and asked her to refrain from giving such statements in the future.
“…People elected her as an MP to resolve the issues of Mandi constituency, and not to make absurd and baseless statements that would create unrest in society. It is an incorrect statement; an MP should not make such statements that would hurt someone…,” said Bhagwant Mann.
“BJP should not just say that it is a statement made in a personal capacity, they should also control this…If you make such absurd statements, then naturally there will be anger. So, I would like to tell the BJP Government to control its MPs…All kinds of statements are made for farmers’ protest, this is intolerable,” he added.
Meanwhile, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has sent a legal notice to Kangana and the producers of the film ‘Emergency’, alleging misrepresentation of the history of Sikhs in the film.
The film, set to release on September 6, in which Kangana Ranaut portrays the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has drawn ire from the Sikh community for its alleged negative portrayal of Sikhs.
Spokesperson SGPC Gurcharan Singh Grewal said, “Kangana Ranaut, who is known for creating new controversies in the midst of controversies, today she arrived in the parliament and the BJP has shrugged off her statements. A notice was sent today to Kangana Ranaut and the people who released that film. The trailer that came, which was seen by the people, should be removed from all platforms and an apology should be sought for this.”
He further said that a notice was sent by the secretary of the Shiromani Committee, Iman Pratap Singh.
“That is why we are making this appeal to the government that this film is creating a wrong portrayal of the personalities associated with the spirit of Sikhs,” he said.
Protesters burnt the effigy of Kangana Ranaut in Bathinda. Sikh leader Gurdeep Singh said that Kangana Ranaut is spreading hatred against the farmers and Sikhs of the country. (ANI)
