Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 9 (ANI): Larsen and Toubro’s (L&T) Precision Engineering Systems business vertical has won a prestigious order for the partial construction of two Fleet Support Ships (FSS) from Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), with the Indian Navy as the end user of the vessels.
The Indian Navy signed a contract with HSL for the design and construction of five FSS in August 2023.
FSS are specialized naval vessels that provide logistics and material support to the naval task force at sea.
With a length of more than 220 meters and a displacement of approximately 45,000 tons, the FSS will be among the largest vessels in the Indian Naval Fleet.
In line with the Government of India’s vision of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” these first-of-their-kind vessels will be built in domestic yards and concurrently constructed by both shipyards to meet challenging delivery timelines.
This collaborative approach to shipbuilding will serve as a cornerstone for achieving the strategic national objectives of rapidly enhancing the Indian Naval fleet while driving economic activity and technological advancement in India’s maritime domain.
In just over a decade since receiving its first defence shipbuilding order in March 2010, L&T has in-house designed, constructed, and delivered more than 70 defence vessels, exemplifying its ‘Make In India’ capabilities. Remarkably, most of these vessels have been delivered either ahead of or on schedule.
L&T will construct the two Fleet Support Ships at its greenfield shipyard in Kattupalli, near Chennai on the east coast of India. It is India’s most modern shipyard, designed in-house and built to globally benchmarked technological practices.
Larsen and Toubro is a USD 27 billion Indian multinational enterprise engaged in PC Projects, Hi-Tech Manufacturing, and Services, operating across multiple geographies.
A strong, customer-focused approach and the constant quest for top-class quality have enabled L&T to attain and sustain leadership in its major lines of business for over eight decades. (ANI)
