Kolkata (West Bengal) [India] August 18 (ANI): Amid the ongoing protest over the rape-murder of trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hosipital, TMC leader Kunal Gosh objected to his party leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray’s demand regarding the interrogation of Kolkata Police Commissioner (CP) Vineet Goyal.
The development came after TMC MP Shukendu Shekar Ray raised questions about Kolkata Police’s probe into the case. On Sunday, Kunal Gosh termed the demand of Shukendu Shekar Roy as ‘illogical’.
Ghosh said that we oppose the demand because CP Goyal did his best within 12 hours and also arrested the accused and an investigation into the case is underway.
“We oppose this demand because CP Vineet Goyal did his best within 12 hours and the accused has been arrested and more interrogation was underway. The CM had asked for more 3-4 days and there were chances of a breakthrough. But now the case is with the CBI and the CM has no interest in it,” Kunal Gosh said.
Gosh further added, “The emotion and the protest of Sukhendu Sekhar Ray are logical but such an illogical demand that he wants the police commissioner arrested, we condemn this demand. He should not have tweeted this.”
In a post on X, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray wrote, “CBI must act fairly. Custodial interrogation of Ex- Principal and Police Commissioner is a must to know who and why floated suicide story. Why wall of hall demolished, who patronised Roy (Sanjay Roy) to be so powerful, Why sniffer dog used after 3 days. 100s of such questions. Make them speak.”
The case has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation from the state police following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
Earlier, CM Mamata Banerjee had given a week to the police, however, the case was immediately transferred to CBI after the Kolkata High Court decision.
Earlier, on August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, sparking nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community.
On August 14, the protest site and the hospital campus at RG Kar were vandalized by a mob, prompting security personnel to disperse the crowd.
To maintain law and order, Kolkata police have imposed section 163 around the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for seven days, effective from August 18.
Amid the ongoing protests, the Kolkata Police imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (formerly Section 144 of the CrPC), around the Medical College and Hospital for seven days, effective from August 18. (ANI)
