Sopore (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], September 29 (ANI): The security has been tightened in Sopore city of Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district ahead of the third and final phase of assembly elections scheduled for October 1.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sopore, Divya D, said that elaborate arrangements have been made at all polling booths as per the Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines.
“The third phase of elections is set to take place in Sopore and the entire North Kashmir. We have set up a very strong security grid here. Campaigning was ongoing till 6 p.m. Now, we are observing the silence period in all assembly constituencies as mandated by the ECI,” the SSP told ANI.
“Security arrangements are fully operational, and we are ready for the elections. As per the guidelines, we have made arrangements at all polling booths,” she added.
Earlier in the day, the Jammu and Kashmir police, along with other security forces, reviewed the security arrangements across the region for the final phase of polling on Tuesday.
Maqsood Ul Zaman, Baramulla DIG, visited the constituency and expressed satisfaction with the security arrangements.
“We have made the arrangements at Baramulla Constituency distribution and collection centre here as per the ECI guidelines. Whatever the guidelines are, we have adhered to them strictly. I came here to ensure that the arrangements are in accordance with the directions, and I am quite satisfied with what we have implemented,” DIG Zaman told ANI.
Earlier in the day, Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Kashmir Zone, VK Birdi, chaired a meeting on Sunday to review the law and order situation in Srinagar.
The meeting took place at the Police Control Room Kashmir and was attended by senior officers from the police, security forces, and intelligence agencies, including all Range DIsG of the Kashmir Zone, DIsG of CRPF South & North Srinagar, district SSPs of Kashmir Zone, SSP PCR Kashmir, SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir, SSP CID SBK, SSP Traffic City Srinagar, SSP CID CIK, SSP Security Kashmir, SP PC Srinagar, Lt Col (IS), and other officers.
Elections are being held in three phases in Jammu and Kashmir.The first phase of Assembly polls was held on September 18, while the second phase of polling was held on September 25.
The counting of votes will take place on October 8.
Assembly elections are being held in the Union Territory after a gap of ten years and are the first since the abrogation of Article 370. (ANI)
