The first case of “super gonorrhoea” known to be passed on by sex in Britain has led to fresh warnings about the rise of antibiotic-resistant disease.

Two women with gonorrhoea that could not be treated by first-choice antibiotics are being investigated by Public Health England (PHE) in an attempt to stop the infection spreading.

Only a handful of cases of gonorrhoea resistant to multiple drugs have been seen around the world and their spread underlines the risk of bacteria that are impervious to antibiotics. The rise of such superbugs, driven by overuse of antibiotics which helps infections develop resistance, is considered a threat so severe it could make much of modern medicine impossible.
