New Delhi [India], August 6 (ANI): Congress MP Manish Tewari on Tuesday gave an adjournment notice in Lok Sabha to discuss the “political crisis in Bangladesh and its implications for India” in the House on Tuesday.
In the notice, Tewari asked the house to suspend Zero Hour and relevant rules and other business of the day to discuss the matter.
“I hereby give notice of my intention to ask for leave to move a motion for the adjournment of the business of the house for the purpose of discussing a definite matter of urgent importance, namely: That this House do suspend Zero Hour and relevant rules relating to Question Hour and other businesses of the day to have a discussion on the political crisis in Bangladesh and its implications for India,” Tewari mentioned in the notice.
“Recent events in Bangladesh have seen Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resign and leave the country due to the unrest. This situation has potential consequences for India’s strategic interests. I urge the Government to inform the House about the steps being taken to address the potential security, economic, and diplomatic repercussions of this situation. I request permission to raise this matter,” Tewari further added.
The political situation in Bangladesh remains volatile following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation amid escalating protests. These demonstrations, largely driven by students demanding an end to the quota system for government jobs, have evolved into broader anti-government protests.
Recent clashes in Dhaka have resulted in at least 135 fatalities, including 14 police officers, with hundreds more injured, according to local media outlets.
Following her resignation, Sheikh Hasina arrived in India on Monday evening. It is unclear whether she will stay in Delhi or travel to another location, with some reports suggesting she might proceed to London.
In response to the crisis, the Cabinet Committee on Security convened on Monday at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence.
The meeting, which included Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, focused on the situation in Bangladesh. Senior officials were also present at the briefing.
The budget session of Parliament began on July 22 and, according to schedule, will end on August 12. (ANI)
