Bikaner (Rajasthan) [India], October 17 (ANI): After the new justice statue was unveiled in the Supreme Court, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal praised the structure’s updated features depicting notable changes to its traditional design and expressed gratitude to the Chief Justice, stating that the new design is a commendable tribute to the country’s constitution.
Speaking to ANI, Union Minister Meghwal said, “In some era, they said that justice is blind and that justice is served on the basis of the Constitution and the law. But when the judge gives justice, how can it be done without seeing?”
“The blindfold on the statue of justice has been removed and the handheld sword is replaced with the Constitution. The new design is a great way to pay respect to the country’s constitution. My greetings to the CJI for this,” said Meghwal.
UBT Sena MP Sanjay Raut however disagreed with the move claiming that it was a propganda of the BJP.
“The court’s job is to protect the constitution and serve justice as per the constitution. But is it happening in the SC? What are they trying to prove by replacing the sword in the hand of the justice statue with the constitution? They are already killing the Constitution and by removing the blindfold from the statue, they want everyone to openly see corruption and the murder of the Constitution… This is a propaganda and a campaign of the BJP and RSS,” Raut said.
The Supreme Court (SC) of India unveiled a redesigned version of the ‘Lady Justice’ statue, marking a significant departure from its colonial past. Traditionally depicted with a blindfold and a sword, the new statue now features ‘Lady Justice’ with open eyes and the Constitution of India in place of the sword.
Commissioned under the guidance of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, the statue, situated in the Supreme Court’s Judges’ Library, seeks to convey that justice in India is not blind but treats everyone equally.
Earlier in the day, CJI Chandrachud formally proposed Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor.
In a communication to the Union government, Chief Justice Chandrachud stated that since he is demitting office on November 10, Justice Khanna would be his successor.
Upon approval by the government, Justice Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice of India. He is set to serve a tenure of six months, concluding on May 13, 2025, before his retirement. (ANI)
