Pune (Maharashtra) [India], January 3 (ANI): Amid rising pollution in the Indrayani River, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday instructed the industries to make sure that no effluent goes in the river and said that the work to clean Indrayani river is underway.
Speaking to reporters, the Maharashtra CM said that the cleaning work of the Indrayani river is going on.
“The Indrayani River cannot be cleaned in one day. The water from the villages, cities and industries goes to the Indrani river. We have started the clarification of this water before releasing it in the Indrayani River. We are arranging the funds for Nagar Palikas and Mahanagar Palika for this. We have also instructed industries to make sure that no influent goes in the river,” Fadnavis said in Pune.
Earlier on December 30, Shiv Sena (UBT) Aditya Thackeray urged the Maharashtra Chief Minister to take stringent action against industrial units polluting the Indrayani river.
“The issue of pollution of the Indrayani River is becoming more serious day by day. It is affecting the health of the locals and devotees. We had brought this issue to the attention of the administration in 2023 as well, but even then, there was zero action!” Aditya Thackeray posted on X.
He further said that Devendra Fadnavis should pay close attention to this and get the proposal for cleaning the river.
“Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should pay close attention to this and get the proposal for cleaning Indrayani, a place of worship for lakhs of devotees, approved by the Centre as soon as possible. Also, strict action should be taken against the factories that discharge sewage into the river without treating it,” he added.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) claimed that citizens have repeatedly demanded from the government to maintain the sanctity of the Indrayani river, but the government has “ignored this.”
“The Indrayani River, a place of worship for the Warkaris, is once again in trouble. Chemical-laden water from some factories located along the Indrayani River is being discharged directly into the River, which is choking the life of the sacred Indrayani River,” Shiv Sena posted on X.
Indrayani river is a sacred river in the Alandi town of Pune. The Indrayani River originates in Kurvande village near Lonavala, a hill station in the Sahyadri mountains of Maharashtra, India.
Fed by rain, it flows east to meet the Bhima river, through the Hindu pilgrimage centres of Dehu and Alandi. It follows a course mostly north of the city of Pune. It is revered as a holy river and is associated with religious figures such as Sant Tukaram and Dnyaneshwar. There is a hydroelectric dam called Valvan Dam on the Indrayani at Kamshet. (ANI)
