Uttar Dinajpur (West Bengal) [India], July 1 (ANI): Tajmul Haque, alias JCB, who is accused of beating two people, including a woman in Chopra, has been brought to a local hospital for medical examination after his arrest in Islampur here on Monday.
In a viral video, Haque was seen beating up two people, including a woman, in a street in Chopra in the presence of onlookers. He will be produced before the ACJM Court Islampur today.
The man and woman who were allegedly beaten up by Haque were also taken to a local hospital for medical examination.
While the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party slammed the Mamata Banerjee government for the incident, the TMC said the matter would be investigated.
Women MLAs of the West Bengal BJP, including Agnimitra Paul, protested outside the State Assembly in Kolkata against the viral video showing Tajmul Haque assaulting two people, including the woman.
“Our question to the Speaker is that if you have permitted the TMC to agitate, why would you not permit us? We are not agitating in support of Sheikh Shahjahan. We are agitating in support of the women of West Bengal and protesting against their oppression. This is not illegal. We had sought permission from the Speaker but we were not permitted. But we have to protest. So, we are here. Why is the Speaker playing a double standard game?,” Paul said.
Chopra MLA Hamidul Rahaman condemned the incident and denied Tajmul’s links with the TMC.
“We condemn the incident. But the woman also did wrong. She left her husband, son, and daughter and became an evil beast. There is some code and justice according to Muslim rashtra. However, we do agree that what happened was a bit extreme. Tajimul Haque is not one of our party members, but still, we are finding any connections at the group level,” Rahaman.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Speaker Biman Banerjee said that the police are investigating the matter.
“Police are investigating the matter. I am not supposed to make any statement on (TMC MLA) Hamidul Rehman’s statement. I can say that this thing should not have happened,” he said.
BJP MP Sukanta Mazumdar hits out at Hamidur Rehman for his “Muslim rashtra” remark and said that the latter has an “anti-India mindset and is the leader of the Talibani people.
“TMC MLA Hamidur Rehman’s close aide is behind this incident. He has said that such things are done in Muslim countries. It means he is saying that part of the country is a Muslim country. He has an anti-India mindset and is the leader of the Talibani people,” Mazumdar said.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party (SP) MP, Dimple Yadav, said the government should take stringent action on the Chopra and Manipur incidents.
“I think stringent action should be taken. I think the government should take action on Manipur incident too,” she said.
Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury said, “Wherever something happens against a woman, we raise our voice. This should be investigated and it will be done. I am fully confident that Mamata Banerjee will get this investigated.”
BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut criticised the TMC-led government in West Bengal over the Chopra incident and questioned the implementation of Sharia Law.
“There is anger in the country over this. A woman was accused of adultery and Sharia law was implemented there. I would like to ask partners of the INDI Alliance, including TMC and Mamata Banerjee, who are protesting with the Constitution every day and doing drama every day: is it written in the Constitution that you can arbitrarily implement Sharia Law in any state?. Rahul Gandhi should answer this, as TMC is a part of INDI Alliance,” she said. (ANI)
