North 24 Parganas (West Bengal) [India], October 6 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dilip Ghosh hit out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the recent floods and landslides in Darjeeling, stating that the reason for the same was the encroachment of land by the Trinamool Congress and neglect in maintaining the cleanliness of the drains and rivers.
He further mocked the CM, stating that she only got her photos clicked and kept demanding money from the Central government without taking up responsibilities.
“…The reason for this is that for years, neither the drains nor the rivers have been cleaned. TMC leaders have encroached on the land and sold it to people… North Bengal is completely submerged in floods, who will they (TMC) blame? A carnival is happening here but the people of North Bengal are being swept away… The Chief Minister goes everywhere and just gets her photos clicked. Now they will say that so much has been destroyed, the central government should give money, that will be their demand and then a movement will start that the government has not given money, they have no responsibility… Wherever there has been flooding in North Bengal, BJP people are present there, helping the people, but where is the government?” Ghosh told reporters here.
Earlier, West Bengal BJP President Shamik Bhattacharya slammed the CM and criticised them for attending the Durga Puja carnival amidst the crisis, further stating that she should have been with the people of North Bengal during the difficult time.
Bhattacharya accused Banerjee of lacking sensitivity and prioritising festivities over governance during a natural disaster. He described the state government as incompetent, claiming that it learned nothing from the Amphan cyclone and lacks an effective disaster management team.
“This is not a time for celebration; the Chief Minister should have left the carnival today and stood with the people of North Bengal, but if anyone expects a humane approach from this government, they are foolish. The BJP has no expectations from this government; the public also knows that this is an incompetent government. This government learned nothing from Amphan (cyclone); there is no role for the disaster management team,” Bhattacharya said on Sunday.
Heavy rainfall in Darjeeling and its surrounding areas triggered landslides, resulting in the collapse of a bridge, seven fatalities, two missing persons, and the closure of multiple roads. (ANI)
