Dhemaji (Assam) [India], June 30 (ANI): The flood situation in Assam has escalated, raising the death toll to 34 with two deaths of children in Dhemaji district on Sunday.
The officials of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said, “Two children died after drowning in flood waters at Gogamukh and Jonai area in Dhemaji district on Sunday and the total death toll has mounted to 34 across the state so far.”
The flood situation in Assam deteriorated after the flood waters submerged new areas and affected over 2.62 lakh people in 12 districts.
According to the flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 12 districts of the state–Kamrup, Karimganj, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Majuli, Cachar, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Kokrajhar, Jorhat were affected by the second wave of flooding.
The ASDMA said that 69252 people were affected in Dhemaji district followed by 61895 people in Cachar, 45281 people in Tinsukia, 34966 people in Majuli, 22882 people in Karimganj, 15010 people in Dibrugarh, 7973 people in Jorhat, 4919 people in Golaghat district.
Following incessant rainfall, the water levels of the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries are gradually increasing and the water level of many rivers are flowing above the level mark at many places.
The water level of the Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger level mark at Dibrugarh and Neamatighat in Jorhat district, Dikhou River at Sivasagar, Jia-Bharali river at Nt Road Crossing in Sonitpur district, Beki river at Road Bridge in Barpeta district, Kushiyara river at Karimganj.
The flood waters have submerged 6546.44 hectares of crop area, and 671 villages under 36 revenue circles.
Nearly 23,000 people are taking shelter in 52 relief camps and distribution centres set up by the administration in six flood-hit districts.
A total of 1,49,009 animals were affected by the deluge. (ANI)
