Digboi (Assam) [India], October 2 (ANI): On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the Indian Army organised a mini-marathon in Assam’s Digboi on Wednesday, officials said.
With a participation of over 150 runners, the event was a resounding success, promoting health, community development, and the timeless Gandhian values of non-violence.
The participants, including enthusiastic runners of all age groups, fostered a commitment to unity, peace, and active social engagement.
The participants were classified into two categories: 12-18 years old who ran a distance of 5 km, encouraging youth to embrace fitness and community participation from an early age. The other category was for the participants over 18 years old; an 11-kilometre run was organised focusing on endurance, health and camaraderie.
The event has been organised under Operation Sadhbhavna. Winners in each category were awarded with medals and cash prizes. All participants were given gift hampers and T-shirts as tokens of appreciation for their participation, the release added.
Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated annually on October 2, marking the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. This day serves as a national holiday across India, during which citizens pay homage to Gandhi’s teachings of non-violence and peaceful resistance.
Born in Porbandar, Gujarat, on October 2, 1869, Gandhi emerged as a pivotal figure in the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule, advocating for non-violent protest and civil disobedience as means to achieve social and political change.
His remarkable leadership and visionary outlook played a significant role in India achieving independence in 1947. The legacy of Mahatma Gandhi continues to inspire generations, resonating not only in India but across the globe.
His teachings remain profoundly relevant as societies strive for peace, tolerance, and social justice in an increasingly divided world. (ANI)
