Siliguri (West Bengal) [India], September 1 (ANI): The residents of the Subhas Pally area in Siliguri took to the streets on Sunday against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last month.

The residents of the city held a protest march with firetorches showcasing their anguish over rape and murder case of the trainee doctor in Kolkata.

Earlier in the day, people from different communities in Kolkata held a protest march starting from College Square and marching towards the Dharmatala area of the city.
Protesters were seen holding a banner that stated, “I want justice for my sisters” while marching towards Dharmatala.
TMC leaders and workers also held a protest in Kolkata over the rape-murder case.
They demanded the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) disclose the progress in the investigation in the case so far and also for a provision for capital punishment in the Constitution for the culprits of such crimes.
On August 31, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the inaugural event of the 2-day National Conference of District Judiciary at Bharat Mandapam, reiterated that many strict laws have been made in the country for the safety of women.
“Today, atrocities against women, safety of children… are serious concerns of society. Many strict laws have been made in the country for the safety of women, but we need to make it more active. The faster the decisions are taken in cases related to atrocities against women, the greater assurance of safety half the population will get,” PM Modi said.
The sexual assault of the trainee doctor has sparked massive outrage and shaken the conscience of the country. The case has been transferred to the CBI from the Kolkata police following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, at the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The alleged murder and sexual assault of a female trainee doctor on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has triggered a war of words between the BJP, with the latter demanding the resignation of Mamata Banerjee.
The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. (ANI)
