New Delhi [India], June 4 (ANI): A delegation of Congress leaders met the Election Commission of India (ECI) and complained about the delay in the updation on the ECI websites on Tuesday.
This came amid the counting of votes for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is underway.
Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that the ECI has assured that there won’t be any delay in the updation.
“We received the report from state units and candidates that after 2:30 PM, there is a delay in the updation on ECI websites. The second complaint was that there is no updation based on the parliamentary constituency,” Singhvi said while speaking to reporters after the meeting.
“We haven’t put any allegation, we just asked that updates be provided. The Election Commission has listened to us. They said that there won’t be any delay in updates on the ECI website,” he added.
Former Union Minister Salman Khurshid said that the Congress delegation had a detailed discussion with the ECI.
“On Jairam Ramesh’s complaint, we have a detailed discussion here (with the ECI)… that matter has been understood, we don’t want to escalate it further,” Khurshid told reporters.
Earlier in the day, the Congress party alleged that the district officers in Uttar Pradesh are being “pressurised” to make certain candidates win the respective seats.
Congress general secretary and in-charge of Communication, Jairam Ramesh warned the administrative officers that the “government is changing” and this “mockery of democracy” will not be tolerated.
“District officials are being pressured in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj, Bansgaon, Meerut, and Muzaffarnagar seats, to make candidates win the seats. Administrative officers should remember that the government is changing and this mockery of democracy will not be accepted,” Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.
Earlier, Jairam Ramesh also alleged a “delay” in counting on several seats in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. “Why is there such a delay in counting on so many seats in UP and Bihar @ECISVEEP? It is completely abnormal,” he posted.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) crossed the majority mark in early leads and is ahead on around 300 seats, while the INDIA bloc, defying all predictions is leading on over 230 seats.
Most exit polls predicted a straight term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with quite a few of them projecting a two-thirds majority for the ruling BJP-led NDA.
Earlier in the day, Jairam Ramesh urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resign taking “moral responsibility”, as the BJP continues to lag behind the majority mark in Lok Sabha elections.
The initial trends also showed Prime Minister Modi trailing behind Congress’ Ajay Rai in Varanasi. Jairam Ramesh attacked PM Modi terming this a “moral and political defeat”.
“He used to pretend that he was extraordinary. Now it has been proved that the outgoing Prime Minister is going to become former. Take moral responsibility and resign. This is the message of this election,” Jairam Ramesh posted on X.
“These trends show that the present (PM) is going to become the former. This is his moral and political defeat. It has never happened before that the Prime Minister trails from his own constituency. The trends in Varanasi are just the trailer,” Jairam Ramesh told ANI.
According to the latest data by the Election Commission of India, Prime Minister Modi is leading against Congress’ Ajay Rai by a margin of 1,52,513 votes. (ANI)
