New Delhi [India], March 27 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday hailed the move of Telangana Chief Minister Revnath Reddy over the state assembly passing a resolution on proposed delimitation and said it seeks to uphold justice, equity and the federal spirit.
Responding to a tweet of the Telangana Chief Minister, Stalin referred to the Joint Action Committee meeting held in Chennai earlier this month and said “we will not let anyone redraw India’s future unfairly”.
“As resolved in Chennai, fulfilled in Hyderabad! Hon’ble Telangana CM Thiru. @revanth_anumula garu has walked the talk by tabling and passing a landmark resolution in the #Telangana State Assembly demanding #FairDelimitation that upholds justice, equity and the federal spirit. Following Tamil Nadu’s lead, this act strengthens the collective call to resist any attempt that threatens the balance of our democracy,” Stalin posted on X.
“This is just the beginning. With the second #JointActionCommittee meeting set to take place in Hyderabad, more states will follow. We will not let anyone redraw India’s future unfairly,” he added.
In his post on X, Revanth Redddy referred to the resolution passed by the state assembly.
“As the leader of the Telangana Legislative Assembly, we passed a resolution today asking the Centre not to take any steps that compromise the political self-respect and legitimate rights of our people,” he said.
“People of #Telangana & citizens of all other states of south India, are united to protecting our rights and not to allow any discriminatory & biased Delimitation to be conducted which would seriously impale the economically highest productive states of the country. We will fight against all attempts to take away our rights. The first battle was won today. The war ahead is long but we will eventually prevail,” he added.
Telangana Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution expressing serious concerns over the impending delimitation exercise, highlighting “the lack of transparent consultations” with key stakeholders.
The resolution, moved by Chief Minister, called for a fair and inclusive approach in conducting the delimitation process, urging extensive consultations with state governments, political parties, and all concerned stakeholders.
“This House expresses its deep concern on the manner in which the impending delimitation exercise is being planned, without any transparent consultations with the stakeholders,” the resolution stated.
“The House urges that any delimitation exercise should be carried out transparently and after extensive consultations with all State Governments, all political parties, and all stakeholders. The states which have effectively implemented the population control program pushed by the Centre, and consequently whose population share has come down, should not be penalized and hence, population should not be the sole yardstick for delimitation,” it added.
The resolution also noted that the intent behind the 42nd, 84th, and 87th constitutional amendments, which aimed at national population stabilization, has not yet been fully realized. As an alternative approach, it suggested that while keeping the freeze on the number of parliamentary seats, constituency boundaries should be redrawn to enhance representation for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and women.
“Hence, while continuing with the freeze on the number of Parliamentary seats, taking State as a unit, redrawing the boundaries of Parliamentary constituencies can be taken up, duly augmenting the SC and ST seats as per the latest population and also providing for reservation for women,” the resolution stated.
