Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], June 1 (ANI): Bhartiya Janata party candidate from Chandigarh Lok Sabha constituency Sanjay Tandon arrived at a polling booth in the Government School of Chandigarh Sector 18 to cast his vote on Saturday.
Urging voters to exercise their right to vote, Tandon emphasized the importance of re-electing Narendra Modi as Prime Minister.
“We tried to reach every area of the city and we organised our programmes in many areas but still I feel that there must be many people whom I could not reach. I appeal to everyone to vote for the betterment of Chandigarh, vote for the democracy of the country, vote to take the country forward and vote to make Narendra Modi the Prime Minister again. And I assure you that the work that has not been done in the last 50 years, I will get it done in five years,” Tandon said.
Taking a dig at his opponent, Manish Tewari, Tandon said “He just keeps running away. He keeps running away because he does not work for that particular constituency. He has landed in Chandigarh after 40 years. His flight is still in the runway and I think he must be eyeing another constituency for 2029 by now”.
BJP candidate Sanjay Tandon is contesting against Congress leader Manish Tewari from the Chandigarh Lok Sabha constituency.
The constituency has been represented by both the BJP and the Congress in the past.
Congress and BJP have dropped two familiar faces this time. While Congress dropped former Union minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, who was the party’s Chandigarh candidate in the past four elections, the BJP dropped sitting MP Kirron Kher, who has represented the seat twice.
In the 2019 election, BJP’s Kirron Kher won the seat for the second consecutive time by defeating Congress candidate Pawan Bansal by 46,970 votes.
Kirron Kher received 2,31,188 votes and Pawan Bansal got 1,84,218. In that election, the constituency saw a voter turnout of 70.62 per cent.
Voting started in the last 57 parliamentary constituencies at 7 am today across seven states and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
The seven States in which polling is scheduled include Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Polling for the remaining 42 Assembly constituencies of the Odisha State Legislative Assembly will also take place simultaneously. (ANI)
