Earlier this year, Deadline reported that Michael Stuhlbarg, who played Elio’s father in Call Me by Your Name, said that director Luca Guadagnino and the author of the original novel, André Aciman, are serious about filming a sequel to the 2017 Oscar-nominated film.

“He [Guadagnino] seems to think that we might be able to pick up the action a few years later,” Stuhlbarg said, “to see what’s happened to these characters and the choices they’ve made, and life after this particularly momentous summer for them all. But it sounds like something he’s serious about, and André Aciman is thrilled I think at the idea.”

Now Aciman has added fuel to the fire by tweeting out confirmation that he is indeed working on a sequel to the beloved book:

I would actually love a sequel to Call Me by Your Name. In fact I am writing one.

And to say fans—including Armie Hammer—are excited is an understatement:

This isn’t the first time that Call Me by Your Name… Again has been teased. Almost a year ago, Guadagnino told The Hollywood Reporter his idea for a sequel, and how he wants Call Me by Your Name to go the Before Sunrise route and have the Elio and Oliver cross paths every few years in the future.

Sony Classics

“I think Elio [Timothee Chalamet] will be a cinephile, and I’d like him to be in a movie theater watching Paul Vecchiali’s Once More,” a 1988 film that dealt with gay love and AIDS,” said Guadagnino. “That could be the first scene [in the sequel]… [HIV] is going to be a very relevant part of the story.”

“In my opinion, Call Me can be the first chapter of the chronicles of the life of these people that we met in this movie, and if the first one is a story of coming of age and becoming a young man, maybe the next chapter will be, what is the position of the young man in the world, what does he want—and what is left a few years later of such an emotional punch that made him who he is?”

No word yet on when the sequel will be finished, and when an eventual film adaptation will hit the big screen, but we don’t think it’s too early to start doing a happy dance to this news.

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was “just the cutest thing ever.”
