World Cup 2018: Ecstasy then agony for proud England fans

From Moscow to Manchester, the emotions were the same among the England faithful. Jubilation gave way to resignation despite the 1,600 miles.

The supporters left the stands at Luzhniki Stadium with their heads in their hands as their hopes for a fairytale ending to the tournament were crushed once again after decades of disappointment.

Yet many said that they were proud of England’s progress through the championship despite the painful 2-1 loss in extra-time.

“I’m absolutely gutted,” Gary Mullan, 36, a financial consultant, said. “But it’s been a top quality tournament. England have this young team that they can massively build on. They’ve got rid of the star mentality and are really working together. The team and the fans have done themselves proud.”
