Lorraine Warren, the real-life paranormal and supernatural investigator who inspired the horror film The Conjuring, has died at the age of 92. 

The ghost hunter passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, according to her grandson Chris McKinnell. 

‘Last night my grandmother, Lorraine Warren, quietly and peacefully left us to join her beloved Ed. She was happy and laughing until the very end,’ he shared in a statement on Facebook on Friday.  

‘She was my angel and my hero, and she will be deeply missed. Please join us in celebrating her life and honoring her beautiful soul. Remember to treasure those you love while you can. Thank you and God bless you all,’ he added. 

Lorraine and her husband Ed were world-renowned for their work studying and fighting the supernatural. Ed passed away in 2006.

She and husband Ed Warren (together above) are famous supernatural investigators with their high profile cases being the Amityville horror house in 1976, the Annabelle Raggedy Ann doll in 1968, and the haunted Perron family in 1971

Together they created the New England Society for Psychic Research and the Warren Occult Museum in their Monroe, Connecticut home. Ed passed away in 2006 

Their works inspired director James Wan’s horror films with titles like The Conjuring, Saw, Dead Silence, Annabelle and the Nun being taken from their investigations.

The museum boasts the largest known occult collection in the world, consisting of the relics that they’ve gathered from a lifetime of studying the metaphysical. 

Lorraine was born on January 31, 1927 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She’d go on to meet her husband Ed at the age of 16.

Actress Vera Farmiga shared this tribute to Lorraine on Twitter on Friday morning 

Together with her husband Ed investigated paranormal cases, the most famous of which was the Amityville horror house in Long Island, New York. 

In 1976 they investigated the Amityville Horror case where New York couple George and Kathy Lutz claimed their house was haunted by a violent, demonic presence that drove them out of the home just 28 days after their purchased it. 

The case, though criticized by some as a hoax, was turned into a book in 1977 and was adapted into moves in 1979 and 2005. 

Another famous case of their concerned a Raggedy Ann doll that was supposedly possessed by the spirit of a young girl named Annabelle Higgins.

 In 1968 the Warrens took the doll and housed it in their museum after pronouncing it to be ‘demonically possessed’. The story inspired the Annabelle horror series.

During their careers the Warrens collected a number of paranormal artifacts and oddities, which they keep in their Connecticut-based Warren’s Occult Museum in Monroe

A case in Harrisville, Rhode Island in 1971 inspired The Conjuring. 

The Warrens claimed that farmhouse where the Perron family lived was haunted by a witch who lived there in the early 19th century.  They claimed that the witch cursed the land so that whoever lived there in the years to follow would die. 

In the 2013 film The Conjuring, Lorraine Warren was a consultant to the production and made a cameo in the film. 

Together Ed and Lorraine co-authored a series of books documenting their paranormal experiences including Ghost hunters: True Stories From The World’s Most Famous Demonologists, Ghost Tracks and The Hunted: The True Story of One Family’s Nightmare.

Actress Vera Farmiga, who portrayed Lorraine in the film The Conjuring, paid tribute to her on Facebook. 

‘My dear friend Lorraine Warren has passed. From a deep feeling of sorrow, a deep feeling of gratitude emerges. I was so blessed to have known her and am honored to portray her. She lived her life in grace and cheerfulness. She wore a helmet of salvation, she dawned her sword, compassion, and took a shield of faith,’ she posted.

‘Righteousness was her breastplate, and she has touched my life so. Love you Lorraine. You’re waltzing with Ed now,’ she added. 

Though they were the world’s most famous ghost-busters, Ed and Lorraine Warren faced great criticism, many calling their investigations to be mere hoaxes.  

Even after Ed passed away, Lorraine continued her paranormal investigations.
