Newcastle vs Spurs prediction – Lee Ryder’s verdict as Magpies look to kick off season in style

Newcastle United are back in Premier League action against Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park this weekend as domestic football makes a welcome return.

The Magpies will face a Spurs side that could be without World Cup stars Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier, Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris, and Dele Alli.

Even with a long list of absentees, the bookies have still made Tottenham favourites for this clash at 21/20 for three points.

But this game could see Jonjo Shelvey put his best foot forward after being red carded in the corresponding fixture last season.

Referee

Martin Atkinson (West Yorkshire)

A swift return to St James’ Park for the experienced official after taking charge of the 3-0 win against Chelsea last May.

Opposition manager view

Mauricio Pochettino said: “Newcastle of course in this period have an advantage to us in their preparation with the whole squad, but that is not a reason to complain.

“We’re not a victim in that situation.

“We need to adapt ourselves and try to be competitive.

“I’m sure we’re going to be competitive.

“We will reach the same level of energy and attitude.”

Charity bet

Newcastle to kick off the new season with three points.
