Hey Friends fans in the UK, how you doin’? If you’re pretty stressed after hearing about the show being yanked off Netflix in the US, we feel your pain.
Some big news was revealed on Tuesday (July 9) that Netflix US will be losing Friends, when its rights-holder WarnerMedia launches its streaming service HBO Max next year.
What you’re probably wondering is if Monica, Phoebe, Rachel, Chandler, Joey and Ross will no longer be there for you in the UK in 2020. Don’t worry just yet!
A Netflix spokesperson tells Digital Spy the changes “only apply to the US and there is no impact on the UK”.
This is the second such scare for Friends fans in Blighty this year, after Netflix UK confirmed to us in February there were no imminent plans for the show to be leaving the service.
Our friends across the pond have no such luck, after Netflix posted a goodbye message to Friends on Tuesday, confirming the sitcom’s move to HBO Max in 2020.
The tweet read: “The One Where We Have To Say Goodbye. We’re sorry to see Friends go to Warner’s streaming service at the beginning of 2020 (in The US). Thanks for the memories, gang.”
The huge loss comes only a few weeks after Netflix US also announced that it would soon be losing the rights to the American version of The Office.
In the US, Friends is off to a new all-encompassing HBO Max service for WarnerMedia, which includes CW shows, DC Entertainment, Adult Swim and original content from Reese Witherspoon and Arrowverse producer Greg Berlanti.
WarnerMedia boss Bob Greenblatt said on Tuesday: “HBO Max will bring together the diverse riches of WarnerMedia to create programming and user experiences not seen before in a streaming platform.”
