Mike Ashley’s heir apparent Michael Murray pockets £10m at crisis-hit Sports Direct – The Times

Mike Ashley’s 29-year-old future son-in-law has earned more than £10 million from Sports Direct in two years, making him better paid than most FTSE 100 chief executives, despite the chain halving in value over that time.

Michael Murray, who is engaged to Mr Ashley’s daughter, Anna, was hired in 2015 as a consultant to run the company’s property division and is now in charge of its “elevation strategy”, designed to make the discount retailer more appealing to younger shoppers.

Mr Ashley founded the business in 1982 as a single shop in Maidenhead, Berkshire. He has grown the company to 370 shops across the UK and 250 overseas and expanded to control retailers including House of Fraser, Evans Cycles and Sofa.com.
