Land grab at Srinagar's Badami Bagh Cantt, CBI books 2 ex-CEOs – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The CBI has registered a case against two former CEOs of

Badami Bagh

Cantonment, Srinagar and some private persons for grabbing defence land – in the form of two hotels and a mill – worth several crosas.

Badami Bagh Cantonment is the most important military establishment in the Kashmir Valley and is also the headquarters of 15 Corps of Indian Army, popularly called Chinar Corps.

The agency had launched a preliminary inquiry last year on information about Tariq Ahmad Khanday (junior engineer) of Badami Bagh Cantonment Srinagar, and unknown officers of defense estates office for issuance of license / construction on construction defense on the private persons .

It was found that one Hotel Solomon, located within Cantonment Board area, Sonwar; An unnamed hotel belonging to one Tariq Ahmad Wani near Government Cantonment GP Pant children hospital, Sonwar; and Tramboo Joinery Mills, Sonwar was running for several years.

BB Cantt has been in the crosshairs of terrorist groups as it has major formations, offices of commanders and operations / communication center, according to officials. In fact, the 15 Corps headquarters inside BB Cantt was the target of a suicide car bombing in 1999.

Hotel Solomon was given on lease by defence authority to an Indraj Sharma for a period of 20 years from 1954 to 1974.

Sharma was further leased out to one Abdul Majid Bakshi in 1960. The fully furnished hotel in 11 Kanals area is worth several crore and currently Muneer Ahmad Bakshi run by while its lease expired.

There is no permission from the defence authority to run this hotel but it’s taking guests on regular basis.

Similarly, Wani’s hotel is located on B-3 defense land, around 16 Marla area on the National Highway at Sonwar, but it is being run illegally. It was originally given to Durganag Trust through its president PN Takoo, but that lease expired long back. The junior engineer Traiq Ahmad Khanday, allowed Wani to run the hotel.

About the Tramboo Joinery Mills, located on 11 Marla defence land near the national highway, CBI says it also has Durganag Trust, which has already expired.

It turns out that CEOs – BK Koul and Ajay Kumar Choudhary – Of Badami Bagh Cantonment, did not take any action against Muzzafar Rashid Wani, who was running the mill at present.

CBI says, “The concerned JE and CEOS submitted false report being fully aware about the status of land and the accused private persons were granted the protection land on the board by the Defense Land on the status of the status as Tramboo Joinery Mills in the land.”

“The unauthorized hotels / stay-houses from Khanday and other officials, with the illegal occupants of income by earning huge income by the Ministry of Defense,” the CBI said.
