India's 'biggest' sex scandal: 4,000 smut files of VIPs tumble out in Madhya Pradesh honeytrap prob

BHOPAL: Nearly 4,000 files containing screenshots of sex chats, videos of naked officers in compromising positions, and audio clips have so far been extracted from the laptops and mobile phones confiscated from the honeytrap ring that allegedly hooked a large number of movers and shakers in the state.

It could turn out to be the biggest ever ‘quid pro quo sex scandal’ in the country as investigation progresses, said an officer.

More and more skeletons are tumbling out of the closet as forensic experts work overtime to dig into memory cards and retrieve erased photos and videos. The list of digital files is likely to touch 5,000 soon, said officers.

It’s alleged that these women — the youngest of whom is 18 — frequented an elite club in Bhopal where rooms were booked by some senior bureaucrats. “There are inputs that the check-in registers of the club are missing and efforts are on to manipulate other records that have images of these girls. This includes CCTV cameras,” said an officer.

From very senior bureaucrats to junior project engineers, and top BJP and Congress leaders, the list of men who fell for the honeytrap ring’s lures seems endless. A senior IPS officer, who was allegedly honeytrapped by the gang, was summoned by the chief minister’s office on Tuesday.

The toughest and most sensitive task ahead for police is to stop these deadly videos and photos from falling into the wrong hands, said an officer, pointing out that an inspector has already been shunted out — in the very initial stage of the probe — after being caught transferring some clips from one of the seized phones to his via Bluetooth.

“He was noticed just in time. It was footage of the teenage girl (Monica Yadav) with a senior government officer, who could not be identified. He may have intended to forward it further. He will face an inquiry once this probe is over,” said an officer, requesting anonymity.

Most of the audio clips and WhatsApp chats suggest a quid pro quo sexual relationship between the bureaucrats, police officers and these women, said sources.

“The basic line of investigation should be the quid pro quo deals. The officers concerned should be charged under Prevention of Corruption Act,” said the officer, pointing out that seeking and accepting sexual favours is considered a bribe under the new anti-corruption law, and it carries a seven-year jail term.

The Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, incorporates the umbrella term ‘undue advantage’, which means any gratification other than legal remuneration and includes expensive club memberships and hospitality, said the officer, adding word ‘gratification’ is not limited to money. “Once investigations are done, honey-trapped government officials can be booked for seeking and accepting sexual favours,” he said.
