When you think of Greggs, you think of an array of reasonably priced pastries – the majority of which are filled with some sort of meat.

But one man who is no longer partaking in a sausage roll, a steak bake or a bacon and cheese wrap is none other than the boss of the nation’s favourite bakery.

Roger Whiteside – who has been chief executive of the company since 2013 – dropped the bombshell while accepting an award for the North East business executive of the year and said Netflix documentary The Game Changers had inspired his change of diet.

According to The Independent, he said: “If you’d asked me three weeks ago which roll I preferred I would have said the original sausage roll, but I’m now attempting to live on a vegan diet.

“Obviously there are arguments based around animal welfare and the environment, but this was all about the health benefits, and I thought I should give it a go.”

The 61-year-old added that he found veganism much harder than vegetarianism, but said Greggs were doing their bit to help vegans out.

He said: “Avoiding meat is easy. The problem is avoiding dairy, avoiding milk and cheese is almost impossible. It would be okay if I had time to cook, but I don’t, so I have to have things that are quick and easy.

“We’ve got the award-winning vegan wrap which I have quite frequently, and the vegan sausage roll which I’ll have about once a week, and now we have the sweet choice with the vegan sweet mince pie.”

Mr Whiteside also confirmed that the bakery would be looking to expand its vegan range following the success of the vegan sausage roll, however, this product took two years to create, so don’t expect a new vegan option for a fair while yet.

The Game Changers – which is produced by big names such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lewis Hamilton, Jackie Chan and Novak Djokovic – sets out to dispel myths linking meat eating with physical prowess, while promoting the benefits of a plant-based diet for athletes.

In the documentary, Schwarzenegger said: “I ate a lot of meat. They show those commercials selling that idea that real men eat meat. But you’ve got to understand that’s marketing – that’s not based on reality.”
