EastEnders has confirmed that Stacey Fowler is the guilty culprit behind Phil Mitchell’s shocking attack.
The BBC soap had already revealed that Phil (Steve McFadden) would be left fighting for his life following an explosive fight, but managed to keep the assailant’s identity under wraps until transmission.
With his enemies stacking up, Tuesday’s tense episode (July 30) saw Stacey (Lacey Turner) lash out and whack Phil in a desperate bid to save her husband Martin.
An already-stressed Martin somewhat foolishly started a fight with Phil when he came to the aid of Kat Moon – who was having her own run-in with him.
As we’d already revealed, Phil turned nasty with Kat in the moments beforehand, after she drunkenly started mocking him over the stolen money.
When Phil threatened Kat’s children as a result, she nervously followed him into The Arches where he quickly turned violent with her.
Witnessing the commotion, Martin – who was having a bad day of his own – stepped in to protect Kat, but angrily punched Phil when he made a cruel remark about Stacey.
With the situation getting increasingly out hand, Phil ended up overpowering Martin and started to strangle him. With Martin’s life in serious danger, Stacey emerged and hit Phil from behind with a wrench – knocking him into the pit.
Phil remains in a critical condition when the show returns on Thursday, but the drama doesn’t end there as there are even more shocking twists to come.
Whether the Slaters can cover their tracks remains to be seen, but with Lacey Turner taking a maternity break after welcoming her first child, it’s looking like Stacey’s days in the Square could be numbered.
EastEnders continues on Thursday, August 1 at 7.30pm on BBC One.
