Doctor Who has teased the return of the Daleks in the trailer for the New Year’s Day special.

Series 11 didn’t feature a single classic Doctor Who foe, with showrunner Chris Chibnall keen to focus on original threats and fresh faces, but he never permanently ruled out the return of an old-school monster.

And it seems we may be getting one sooner than expected, as the trailer for the hour-long special titled ‘Resolution’ hints Jodie Whittaker will come up against the iconic pepper pot-shaped villains for the first time.

In the action-packed trailer, The Doctor tells her companions “This is the DNA of the most dangerous creature in the universe”, explaining that it’s been buried on Earth since the ninth century.

The trailer ends on a cliffhanger as Graham worriedly asks: “Does it have a name?”

For the special, Jodie Whittaker will be joined by her regular team of assistants, as well as a trio of brand-new co-stars.

The BBC has confirmed that Charlotte Ritchie will play a character called Lin, Nikesh Patel will play Mitch and Daniel Adegboyega will star as Aaron. But their character names are all that’s been revealed for now.

Meanwhile, Jodie Whittaker has stated that she will definitely be back for series 12, and can’t wait to get a shift on and step back into the TARDIS.

The Doctor Who New Year’s special airs January 1 at 7pm on BBC One.
