Now, speaking to Mail Online, American pro Alex Murphy has discussed her admiration for Gemma, despite all the naysayers who doubted her appearance on the series and even made remarks about her weight.

“I am so proud of Gemma,” Alex beamed. “She is really a great person and she did such a good job on Sunday. She fell in the dress rehearsal. She fell and fell and fell. But she kept herself going. She got up and got on with it.

“And all of those who say she can’t do it, or that her weight was a disadvantage – all those awful remarks – Gemma still did it.”

The Boston-born athlete, who’s dancing with Brian McFadden this year, also admitted that she’s faced scrutiny of a similar ilk during her career, noting: “I’m a bigger girl in the skating world and have had a lot of scrutiny because of my size. It’s tough. They want you to be really small and it’s obviously harder to be lifted up as a bigger girl, a girl with curves.

“So, for me to see Gemma do it is inspiring. I am 110 percent behind her and when I watch her it tugs on my heartstrings.”

Alex has also been shouting Gemma’s praises on social media.

“Didn’t plan on sharing this with @DailyMailUK today but I’m actually so glad I did,” she tweeted.

“@missgemcollins Your @dancingonice family is very proud. I know there are a lot of other girls that could learn from this-esp ME. In the words of GC, ‘Embrace it honey!'”

Dancing on Ice continues tomorrow (January 13) at 6pm on ITV.
