After falling ill, John Tortorella coaches in hoodie instead of suit – Russian Machine Never Breaks

John Tortorella is his own character, and he proved it again on Thursday night. During a game in Philadelphia, the Columbus Blue Jackets head coach was seen wearing a hoodie on the bench.

Tortorella had good reason to ditch his customary suit. He has been battling against flu-like symptoms for some time and wanted to feel comfortable and warm while on the bench. It didn’t stop Twitter from having fun with the moment, though.

The Blue Jackets Twitter account changed their profile image to a photo of Tortorella and even temporaly changed their name to the “Columbus Blue Hoodies.”

Tortorella was feeling so ill, he had his assistant coach Brad Larsen handle the post game press conference.

“Did you see his face? It was pretty white. He battled through. He had a tough night,” Larsen said. “You know, I think he had about seven shirts on, and I’m sure there’s a lot of talk about the hoodie. He was shaking like a leaf. He’s fighting a virus right now.”

While this goes against tradition that coaches wear full suits during a game, there isn’t a written, formal dress code coaches must abide to.

Brandon Dubinsky joked with Aaron Portzline of The Athletic that the move should result in a fine.

#CBJ Brandon Dubinsky on coach John Tortorella’s hoodie tonight:

“I think it’s a fine. Coaches in the NHL wear suits on the bench. He’s going to have to pay some cash into the fine fund.”

How much?

“You’ll have to ask (Lukas) Sedlak. He’s the fine master.”

CBJ did break a two-game losing streak, winning the game 10 seconds into overtime 4-3. Defenseman Seth Jones scored two goals for his club. The hoodie-wearing may continue for good luck.
